2nd meeting of the Water Expert Group of the Union for the Mediterranean
On the 4th of November, Gaëlle Thivet represented Plan Bleu at the 2nd meeting of the Water Expert Group (WEG) of the Union for the Mediterranean held in Cairo.
Twenty-one Euro-Mediterranean countries as well as the European Commission and observer members (donors, intergovernmental and non-governmental organizations) were represented at this meeting focused on the elaboration of the Strategy for Water in the Mediterranean.
The WEG approved the guidelines proposed by the Technical Drafting Group concerning the contents of the Strategy and the 4 thematic chapters, as well as the country role map as chapters’ coordinators and/or contributors.
The contributions from the countries and the observers should be finalized within end-November. The Strategy is aimed to be adopted at the next Ministerial Conference on Water (12-14 April 2010, in Spain).
Plan Bleu had the opportunity to present, jointly with the Mediterranean Water Institute (IME), a first contribution prepared by the Mediterranean Action Plan - through the MEDPOL programme and Plan Bleu- and the IME which aims at completing the work of the member states of the UfM, on the basis of a regional view of the water issue in the Mediterranean. This contribution will be completed and enriched in order to be transmitted to the countries coordinating the preparation of the different chapters of the Strategy.
