Water Conference “Towards the new Long Term Strategy for Water in
the Mediterranean”

On the 2nd and 3rd of November, Mohammed Blinda and Gaëlle Thivet participated in the joint Egyptian-Dutch Water Conference “Towards the new Long Term Strategy for Water in the Mediterranean” held in Cairo.

This conference, which gathered together more than 250 participants coming from different Euro-Mediterranean countries (water experts, political decision-makers, representatives of international and regional organizations, parliamentarians, NGO…), aimed at contributing to both i) the development of the Strategy for Water in the Mediterranean and ii) the preparation of the forthcoming United Nations Climate Change Conference (Copenhagen, December 2009).

It did so by addressing the four themes of the Strategy for Water: governance, water demand management, climate change adaptation, financing.

Plan Bleu was invited to introduce the discussions of the working group on water demand management and non conventional water resources and to present the main conclusions of this working group during a plenary session (lien working group report).

At the end of the Conference, the participants adopted the “Cairo Message on Climate change adaptation and Water in the Mediterranean” to be transmitted to COP 15 UN Climate change Conference.
