Regional conference on urban transport in the Mediterranean

Plan Bleu participated with the French Agency for Development (AFD), CODATU (Cooperation for urban mobility in the developing world), CERTU (Centre for the Study of Urban Planning, Transport and Public Facilities), and the Syrian government to the organization and animation of a regional conference on urban transport in the Mediterranean, that was held in Damas, from 12th to 13th of April. On that occasion, Sylvain Houpin led two out of the four sessions focusing on urban integration of transport networks and on the environmental and social impacts of urban transport.

This conference gathered about 200 participants from 15 countries ; with a strong Syrian attendance (local and central administration, universities, private sector). Opened by Mr Abdullah Al-Dardari, Vice Prime Minister of Syria and by Mr Eric Chevallier, French Ambassador, the four technical sessions benefited from the active participation of the Saoudi Arabian Minister of Transport (Mr Jubarah bin Eid Al-Suraiseri) and from three Syrian Ministers (Local Administration: Dr.Tamer Alhajah; the Vice Minister of Transports in charge of land transport : Mr Rajeh Sarea and the Minister of Transport : Dr Yarob S. Badr).

This conference is part of the “sustainable urban transport” programme of the Marseilles Center for Mediterranean Integration that aims in particular to organize a six meetings cycle over three years. The next meeting will be held in Marseilles, from November 29th to December 1st of 2010.
