Conference on « Food crisis and increased water scarcity in Maghreb »
On the 23rd of February 2009, Plan Bleu participated in the Conference on « Food crisis and increased water scarcity: which challenges for the farmers in Maghreb? » organized by the Foundation for world agriculture and rural life (FARM), CIRAD and CIHEAM in the framework of the Paris International Agricultural show. Henri-Luc Thibault was invited to make a presentation focus on the arbitrations concerning agricultural water within a context of increased water scarcity. The different presentations and discussions have underlined the need for improving water and soil productivity in Maghreb, without bringing rainfed and irrigated agriculture into conflict inasmuch as both of them rely on scare water resources. They also emphasized the key role of family farms for improving productivity. Thus, the promotion of agricultural professional organizations and the development of appropriate public policies were acknowledged as conditions for farmers’ engagement in a better agricultural production and water management.
