Natural parks and the Union for Mediterranean

On June 11th, in La Garde (France), Henri-Luc Thibault participated in the Symposium “Natural parks and the Union for Mediterranean", organized by the Parcs Nationaux de France.

The meeting gathered more than 200 participants from various rims of the Mediterranean representing parks managers, scientists, politicians, civil society and financing institutions. During this meeting, the presentations and exchanges demonstrated how natural parks could contribute to the integration of the Union for Mediterranean’s countries.

Four main topics were discussed: sustainable tourism and visitors welcoming in the natural parks, global changes impacts on Mediterranean ecosystems, agropastoralism in the Mediterranean natural parks, governance of the Mediterranean ’s protected areas.

During the session dedicated to the unity of the Mediterranean living and introduced by Plan Bleu, Jean-Yves Perrot, IFREMER’s chairman and managing director, Charles-François Boudouresque, Port Cros Scientific Council’s chairman and Jacques Blondel, CNRS’s research director presented the scientists’ and research on Mediterranean biodiversity ’s point of view and the state of marine - as well as terrestrial - Mediterranean ecosystems.

The symposium underlined the value of protected areas and their networks in the Mediterranean integration and wished that they will get stronger attention and support.
