UN Regional meeting on Environment Statistics and Accounts
Cécile Roddier-Quefelec represented Plan Bleu at the United Nations Regional meeting on Environment Statistics and Accounts held in Beirut, 7-9 April 2010. This regional meeting organised by the UN Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) in cooperation with the UN Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) ended a three years project implemented jointly by ESCWA and ECLAC, aiming at strengthening the capacity of members countries in Environment Statistics, Indicators and Accounts in support of progress toward achieving the internationally agreed development goals in the ESCWA and ECLAC region (ESIAP project).
The meeting, which gathered around 50 participants (mainly from Environment ministries and agencies and the National Statistical Offices), offered the opportunity to present Plan Bleu activities, as regional observatory on environment and development in the Mediterranean (data collection, indicators calculations, studies and assessments) as well as it’s perspectives as regard the development of economic approaches and the use of integrated economy and environment accounts.
The evaluation of the ESIAP project, together with the national reports showed an increasing interest toward environment accounting, and particularly water accounts.
The meeting has endeavored to identify and propose a work plan for environment statistics, indicators and accounts for the ESCWA region.
