Workshop of the French National Agency for Water and Aquatic Environments

On 9 and 10 December 2009, the French National Agency for Water and Aquatic Environments organized in Paris a European workshop on the political stakes and research issues related to the economic instruments developed for water resources management in Europe.

This workshop was in line with the obligations of the Water Framework Directive, approved in 2000. The debates were about new financing instruments, economic instruments for managing water such as tradable permits to pollute or withdrawn water, water pricing, in order to propose innovative solutions to the increasing financing needs, while limiting the increase of States budgets and of water bills for end users.

The Blue Plan is developing economic analyses of Water demand management instruments. Its participation to this seminar was a great opportunity to better grasp research results and perspectives. It also allowed enforcing relations with the main actors involved.
