Symposium “The integrated management of the coastal zones
for the Mediterranean, from local to regional : how to stop the
biodiversity loss ?”

On the 18th and 19th of December 2008, the Ministry of Ecology, Energy and Sustainable Development and the National and Regional Development, as part of the French Presidency of the European Union, has organized in Nice a symposium called “The integrated management of the coastal zones for the Mediterranean, from local to regional : how to stop the biodiversity loss ?”. Gathering governments, local authorities, managers, field players and the NGO of the countries concerned by the Union for the Mediterranean, the symposium attempted to present, based on experiences and cases study, the main operational implementations of the Additional Protocol of the Barcelona Convention relating to the Integrated management of the coastal zones for the Mediterranean (Protocol ICZM), signed by 14 of the parties in January 2008.

The symposium was built around four technical workshops:

The symposium organization has permitted the CAR and MAP concerned by the protocol ICZM to take a prominent place. Henri-Luc Thibault for the Plan Bleu has shared the presidency for the workshop n°3 “Integrated management of the coastal zones facing climate changes” and Pierre Icard has presented the guideline note prepared for workshop n°1 “Sustainable Tourism”.

The documents prepared for the symposium are available on the symposium website (www.gizcnice.eu).

The symposium closure, on the 19th of December, has permitted to proceed to the signature of a convention between the French Global Environment Facility and Plan Bleu, to ensure the funding of Plan Bleu engaged works on the theme on economic value of goods and services furnished by the marine ecosystem of the Mediterranean.
