International symposium « Resolving the water energy nexus »
From the 26th to the 28th of November 2008, the International symposium « Resolving the water energy nexus », organized by the RED-Ethique Association in the framework of the UNESCO’s International Hydrological Programme, took place in Paris. Plan Bleu contributed to the organization of this conference through the preparation of a Mediterranean workshop dealing with the current and future links between water, energy and climate change.
This symposium, constituting a preparatory event to the 5th World Water Forum (Istanbul, March 2009), gathered together more than 400 participants coming from all parts of the world : representatives of international organizations, States and decentralized institutions, firms producing or exploiting energy, water and sanitation services, of the academic world, NGO, etc. It dealt with water energy interactions and underlined the challenges presented by appropriate governance and good practices as regards water and energy; this being in industrial countries as well as in developing or emerging countries. The urgency of the problems of access to energy, water and sanitation was confronted with the need to integrate the corresponding issues into wider policies concerning environment, sustainable development and individual and collective ethics regarding the usage of goods essential to humankind.
The Mediterranean workshop made it possible to stress the importance of the interactions between water and energy in this region of the world which has to face up to increasing pressures on these two limited resources; in addition these pressures will be exacerbated by the impacts of climate change. It also underlined the need to develop and implement, in each Mediterranean country and at regional level, strategies for integrated water and energy resources management, within a prospective vision.
